2. The Roman pit
Under the houses and streets of the center of the town, in the lot where the town hall is placed nowadays, we can find the remains of a dormer Roman camp. Nowadays, we can only see two tambours of columns, which have been used for years as stool; and a fragment of the pit. The archaelogist Bernat Roig and the geographer Nadal Burguera will show the to us
Under the subsoil of the urban core of Ses Salines, in the zone of Plaza Mayor we can find remains of a Roman pit. It is the only Roman pit documented in Baleares nowadays. Currently, we don't know 100% for sure its perimeter. The pit has the shape of a reversed triangle, and in the sections that are revealed, its measures are 3'20 of width and 3'50 m of depth, without big variants. Inside this perimeter, it has been found tambours of columns, a pondus, a sword and other remains; and around it, some tombs. It has not been decided whether the pit was protecting a little castrum of a castra, because there is not enough information.
The discovery of this important heritage owes to the observation and study of Honorat Bauçà. Nowadays, you can see a little piece in C/la Pau, covered by a crystal, and another little piece in a particular property. The presence of this pit in Ses Salines not only proves the Roman occupations of the zone, but also the value that had as a strategic place.Bernat Roig
